TYPES OF SUMMER CAMP JOBS
There are a range of summer camp jobs available at each camp. However, its important that you realise – first and foremost – your role as a camp counsellor is to teach new skills, share your culture and be a positive role model… basically think of yourself as the big brother or sister/superhero to all the kids at the camp. After a season at summer camp you will have an entire different family, a ‘camp’ family.
Camp counsellors need loads of enthusiasm, energy and experience working with children and a great sense of humour will also come in handy. Every one of the summer camp jobs will be the most rewarding job you’ve every had. But don’t kid yourself, it is hard work. There are two types of camp counsellors/summer camp jobs:
General Counsellor
One of the most popular jobs (some say most important jobs) at camp is General Counsellor. You will have strong all round skills and will be able to assist and lead in a variety of activities. Your main responsibility is supervision of children in the cabin or between activities. The relationship you build with the kids will truly make your camp experience.
This is a very popular role at camp as it allows for more variety in your day – you’re not instructing the same activity for the entire duration of camp. One week you could be helping on the high ropes course and the following on the basketball court. You’ll get the chance to try things you never expected!
Activity Specialist
Camps hire activity specialist to teach and coach a specific activity. You will need to have experience teaching the activity. As an Activity Specialist you will instruct the activity daily to groups of children. There is a wide variety of activities that are in demand (see below), but we find that Aussies with any waterfront skills are on the top of camp directors list. So if you have any experience with; Lifeguarding / Waterskiing / Wakeboarding / Kayaking / Motorboat Driving / Swimming be sure to get in touch.
Activity Specialists still have child care duties and live in cabins with campers, but also devote the majority of their day instructing their skilled activity. So you could find yourself on the waterfront all day, sounds good right?!
